In a Swiss Tournament, every player plays in every round regardless of their match results. Each win counts as one (1) point, and each loss counts as zero (0) points.
Swiss System format is available for 1x1 and 2x2 teams structure tourneys (1 Player against 1 Player and Partner tourneys).
SW Format
In SW Format, the tournament is completed when there is only one Player/Team remaining who is undefeated.
- The minimum number of Players/Teams in a SW tourney is 4 Players or Teams.
- Players/Teams will be assigned a seed based on their Rating or on Random basis (in Partners tourneys that are seeded by Rating, the seed will be based on the Rating of Player A).
- If the number of Players/Teams is odd, the Player/Team with the lowest Seed will be awarded the "Bye".
- Player/Team having a Bye will get a win and 1 point.
- Undefeated Players/Teams should play other undefeated players so that the tournament eventually comes to an end.
- Everyone is playing someone with the same score (or as close to the same score as possible).
- No previous pairings are duplicated. Players/Team should NEVER play the same Player/Team twice.
- In every score group, the top half players are playing the bottom half players in order.
- All matches wins and losses will be posted as soon as reported to Players' matches stats.
- Players may withdraw after the Round is completed.
- Tourney played and victory will be posted on finishing the tourney to Player's tourney stats.
- The tourney Prizes Pot will be allocated to all Players based on the points accumulated during the tourney.
Example of an SW Tournament
This is a simplified explanation of how SW Swiss System pairings are made. The detailed rules of how to do the pairing are usually quite complicated.
Players in the tournament listed in order of highest Seed to lowest. Seed will be determined either by Rating or Random based on the tournament rules.
Player #1 Player #2 Player #3 Player #4 Player #5 Player #6
First Round - Pairings:
- Players are split in 2 sub-groups so the top half players are playing the bottom half players in order:
Player #1 vs Player #4 (assume player #1 wins) Player #2 vs Player #5 (assume player #5 wins) Player #3 vs Player #6 (assume player #3 wins)
- Players Standings will be as follows:
Player #1 1 - 0 Player #2 0 - 1 Player #3 1 - 0 Player #4 0 - 1 Player #5 1 - 0 Player #6 0 - 1
Second Round - Pairings
- Based on the results of Round 1, Players with 1 point will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 1:
Player #1 Player #3 Player #5
Players with 0 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 2:
Player #2 Player #4 Player #6
- Player #5 would be moved down to the top of List 2 so that both lists have even number of Players
Player #1 vs Player #3 (assume player #1 wins) Player #5 vs Player #4 (assume player #4 wins) Player #2 vs Player #6 (assume player #2 wins)
- Players Standings will be as follows:
Player #1 2 - 0 Player #2 1 - 1 Player #3 1 - 1 Player #4 1 - 1 Player #5 1 - 1 Player #6 0 - 2
- The Tourney is over and Player #1 is declared the winner.
- If the Tourney Fees were 100 PIPs; 80% of the Total Pot will be allocated as Prizes to Players:
Total Pot = 100 x 6 = 600 PIPs Prize Pot = 600 x 80% = 480 PIPs Total Points = 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6 Points Point Value = 480 / 6 = 80 PIPs
The Prize Pot will be allocated to Players as follows:
Player #1 2 x 80 = 160 PIPs Player #2 1 x 80 = 80 PIPs Player #3 1 x 80 = 80 PIPs Player #4 1 x 80 = 80 PIPs Player #5 1 x 80 = 80 PIPs Player #6 0 x 80 = 00 PIPs
Players will also get the appropriate Activity Bonus; if Player #1 is a Diamond Member s/he will get 2 x 20 PIPs = 40 PIPs as Activity Bonus.
SW-T Format
In SW-T Swiss System format, the number of rounds is preset by the TD before the tournament starts and regardless of the number of participants, the number of rounds does not change once the tournament begins. However, the Maximum Number of Rounds permitted based upon the Number of Players/Teams shall be as follows:
Number of Players/Teams |
Maximum Number of Rounds |
4 |
3 |
5-7 |
4 |
8-15 |
5 |
16-31 |
6 |
32-63 |
7 |
64-127 |
8 |
128+ |
9 |
The number of rounds to be played is indicated by the number after the "T". For example, in a SW-T5 tournament, there will be 5 rounds.
After all the rounds are complete the player with the most points wins the tournament. If there is no conclusive point leader there is no winner of the tournament.
- The minimum number of Players/Teams in a SW-T tourney is 4 Players or Teams.
- Undefeated Players/Teams should play other undefeated players so that the tournament eventually comes to an end ( this may not always be possible in the later rounds of a SW-T tourney).
- The tourney will continue until the number of rounds specified by the TD or the maximum rounds permitted is achieved.
- Tourney played and victory will be posted on finishing the tourney to Player's tourney stats.
- The tourney Prizes Pot will be allocated to all Players based on the points accumulated during the tourney.
Example of an SW-T Tournament
This Tournament is set as SW-T4.
Players in the tournament listed in order of highest Rating to lowest (if tournament is seeded by Rating) or in order of highest Seed to lowest (if tournament is seeded by Random):
Players in the tournament listed in order of highest Seed to lowest. Seed will be determined either by Rating or Random based on the tournament rules.

Player #1 vs Player #3 (assume player #1 wins) Player #5 vs Player #4 (assume player #5 wins) Player #2 vs Player #6 (assume player #2 wins)

Player #1 2 - 0 Player #2 1 - 1 Player #3 1 - 1 Player #4 0 - 2 Player #5 2 - 0 Player #6 0 - 2
Third Round - Pairings
- Based on the results of Round 2, Players with 2 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 1:
Player #1 Player #5
Players with 1 point will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 2:
Player #2 Player #3
Players with 0 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 3:
Player #4 Player #6
- As all paired Players, never played before; they will be paired as follows:
Player #1 vs Player #5 (assume player #1 wins) Player #2 vs Player #3 (assume player #2 wins) Player #4 vs Player #6 (assume player #6 wins)
- Players Standings will be as follows:
Player #1 3 - 0 Player #2 2 - 1 Player #3 1 - 2 Player #4 0 - 3 Player #5 2 - 1 Player #6 1 - 2
- Although there is an undefeated winner; the tourney will have to continue to Round 4.
Forth Round - Pairings
- Based on the results of Round 3, Players with 3 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 1:
Player #1
Players with 2 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 2:
Player #2 Player #5
Players with 1 point will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 3:
Player #3 Player #6
Players with 0 points will be listed, in order of Seed, in List 4:
Player #4
Since there is an odd number of Players in List 1, Player #1 plays the top Player in List 2, which is Player #2. Similarly, since there is an odd number of Players in List 4, Player # 4 plays the bottom Player in List 3, which is Player #6. Since List 2 and 3 both contained an odd number of Players, these two lists are combined so that Player #5 plays Player #3.
- Based on the above; the first pairings will be as follows:
Player #1 vs Player #2 Player #5 vs Player #3 Player #6 vs Player #4
- Since Player #6 played Player #4 before in Round 3, the TD will Swap Player #3 with Player #6; and the final pairings will be as follows:
Player #1 vs Player #2 (assume player #2 wins) Player #5 vs Player #6 (assume player #6 wins) Player #3 vs Player #4 (assume player #3 wins)
- Players Standings will be as follows:
Player #1 3 - 1 Player #2 3 - 1 Player #3 2 - 2 Player #4 0 - 4 Player #5 2 - 2 Player #6 2 - 2
- The Tourney is over and No Player is declared the winner.
- If the Tourney Fees were 100 PIPs; 80% of the Total Pot will be allocated as Prizes to Players:
Total Pot = 100 x 6 = 600 PIPs Prize Pot = 600 x 80% = 480 PIPs Total Points = 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 12 Points Point Value = 480 / 12 = 40 PIPs
The Prize Pot will be allocated to Players as follows:
Player #1 3 x 40 = 120 PIPs Player #2 3 x 40 = 120 PIPs Player #3 2 x 40 = 80 PIPs Player #4 0 x 40 = 00 PIPs Player #5 2 x 40 = 80 PIPs Player #6 2 x 40 = 80 PIPs
Players will also get the appropriate Activity Bonus; if Player #1 is a Diamond Member s/he will get 3 x 20 PIPs + 1 x 10 PIPs = 50 PIPs as Activity Bonus. |
